Brewtal Box #042 / AUG 2021 - SALTUS BREWING

SALTUS BREWING KOOP

The story of Saltus Brewing Koop begins with pure pleasure, the pleasure of drinking a good beer. And it is that Saltus is born from disagreement with the established order, the one that imposes sad and boring ways of drinking beer on us. Searching for an alternative is how these two murgiatarras began to brew their first beers. The roof of a garage and some plastic cubes are enough to give free rein to this illusion and the first results are not long in coming. Saltus did not yet exist, but its essence was already beginning to permeate the palates of many Zuiatarras. And this had just begun. Curiosity and the constant desire to improve did the rest. Saltus was born in 2016 as a 'gypsy' brewery and brewed its first batches in different factories in the Basque Country. In 2017 they decided to buy an old factory in Pamplona and together with other nomads they formed the EH Bier Koop cooperative. After a year of rehabilitation works, the factory begins to produce its first batches in 2018 and they have been there ever since…

The most hoppy styles abound among its beers, as experimentation with this ingredient has been a constant throughout its brewing career. But in addition to good work in their elaborations there is commitment. Commitment to its closest areas, in the search for local raw materials that also provide added value to its environment. For this reason they use hops planted in Olite or start their own cultivation in the Zuia valley. With their attitude they show us that there is life beyond overseas hops and that betting on the local is also betting on quality and the future of the sector.

The can has been the packaging of choice since the time they made their first Kloratipa and they have not stopped betting on it. Always in 33cl format, it is undoubtedly the preferred shelter for your beers.

Beer: BIZI GERA

Style: American Sour Ale

The color of this sour ale recipe is somewhere between red and orange, it has a fine pinkish head and a super hazy look. It is basically a fruit juice to which large amounts of raspberry and passion fruit have been added, which prevail both in color and aroma as well as in flavor. The lactose helps to enhance its sweetness at the beginning of the drink and its other main fruit, the lime, favors its intense acidity at the end. It has so much fruit that we believe it has more vitamins than alcohol. So let's hit the porrón that now is that there is little summer left!

Beer: STERRATO

Style: Hazy Rye IPA

The Saltus brewers trade rye for a load of oats to make this Hazy Rye India Pale Ale dedicated to the more “zumicolous” palates. It is a straw yellow beer, with a fine white foam and a super hazy or hazy appearance. This time it comes loaded with Rakua and Motueka hops from New Zealand that accompany the classic Citra. It is a fabulously explosive combination of fresh fruit in both aroma and flavor. This beer is quite silky on the palate, with an elegant body and a bitterness that invites us to continue drinking it without stopping. We recommend pairing this Rye with gazpacho, ceviche or other refreshing and summer meals.

Beer: HOP TAKE

Style: New England IPA

This 6% NEIPA is another of the 'core' beers of Saltus Brewing. It is straw colored, has the cloudy appearance that characterizes this style so much and also has a fine white head. It is a very aromatic beer with an intense tropical flavor due to the 'double-dry hop' of the classic Citra and Mosaic that has been carried out in its preparation. It is silky on the palate and has a slight bitterness that is very pleasant at the end of the drink. A whole tropical juice!

Beer: KLORATIPA

Style: West Coast IPA

Of a very popular style, “Klorat” has been the flagship IPA for years and the flagship of Saltus Brewing. It is straw-coloured, slightly cloudy in appearance and also has a white head with fine bubbles. Simcoe and Citra hops have been used in its preparation, which give it fruity flavors and aromas and a resinous touch. It has light bitterness and a dry profile on the finish and, together with its low alcohol content, make it a refreshing and easy to drink beer. Ideal for a day at the pool or beach. One deal calls for another drink!
