Brewtal Box#13

Time to try Eastern European craft beers!

The craft beer movement is spreading more and more in Budapest and new craft breweries are starting to appear at a dizzying pace. Brewtal brings you this month one of the most prominent craft beers in Hungary, by the hand of a Zaragoza artisan project that is enjoying a lot and is selling like hot cakes.

MAD SCIENTIST (Budapest, Hungary)

Founded by Csaba, Tamás and Gergő it is one of the youngest breweries in Budapest and in a short time has become one of the most visible and recognizable craft beer brands in Hungary. They operate on the outskirts of Budapest in a historic building that used to be a large brewery and is now home to several up-and-coming craft breweries. The site, built in 1912, is truly amazing. The bright red brick, the stone barrels that face the entrance and the Zsolnay tiles make this place one of the most amazing industrial heritage sites in the city. The guys at Mad Scientist are making a name for themselves brewing exceptionally tasty beers with very strong fruit flavors, often including fruit in their specialty IPAs. They have introduced New England IPAs, which are perhaps the best beers in Hungary right now, and are on their way to becoming very popular on the European beer scene. Graphic design is an integral part of their product, and for this they commissioned the artist. András Baranyai to create all his labels.

Beer: Mango Bay
Style: Mango Milkshake Pale Ale

As the weather in the fall started to turn ugly, the Mad Scientist guys wanted to make a beer to remind people of summer. It is an American Pale Ale inspired by a mango milkshake. It has a slight creaminess, aroma and flavor dominated by mango, as well as a pleasant bitterness from hops and a sweet taste from malt.

ABV: 5.2%

IBU: 40

Beer: Jam52
Style: American Pale Ale

It's Mad Scientist's first American-style beer. Unlike the classic version, this new-age APA has all the fruitiness of an IPA with lower alcohol and greater drinkability. Jam52 is cloudy blonde in appearance and strives for a good balance between malt and hops, with neither standing out noticeably. Its aroma has notes of hops, citrus and malt. The flavor is sweet with hints of malt, hops, and citrus, leading to a bitter finish.

CIERZO BREWING CO. (Zaragoza, Spain)

The origins of Cierzo Brewing Co. in the world of craft beer they go back 15 years, when Sergio Ruíz, their brewmaster, made his first recipes at home. It is not if not in July 2018, that they founded the brewery after the success in record time of a crowdfunding. They currently have a Brewpub in the center of Zaragoza, where they make and sell beer, and a main factory in the town of Caspe (Zaragoza). The guys from Cierzo have the philosophy that beer is only perfect when it is brewed with passion, respecting each recipe, its times and its ingredients. We could not fail to mention the wonderful graphic load of the Cierzo labels, a work carried out by the artist Eva Felipe.

Beer: Citra
Style: IPA

This India Pale Ale, in its 44cl can format, is brewed with the American Citra hops, which is one of the most sought after among craft and home brewers for its intense citrus aroma and flavor. The notes of this beer wander through citrus, pineapple, ripe peach and mango. It is a blonde with a medium body and medium-low carbonation, rather fruity and intensely bitter, but very easy to drink.

Beer: Mosaic
Style: Session IPA

The name comes from the Mosaic hop, which is truly the star of this refreshing, low-proof blonde ale. When served it has a pale golden color, somewhat veiled and covered with a fine and long-lasting white foam. The use of Mosaic hops in dry hopping gives it an intense aroma of tropical fruits, citrus and pine, with a light and bitter body. Ideal to accompany an aperitif, a starter or to have pints chatting with friends.
